Tremble is a horror podcast that cuts through hype to figure out what actually works, whether a movie is trying to scare you, make you laugh, or do both at once.
On this episode, the Tremble crew gets an unsettling grin from Smile, Parker Finn’s 2022 supernatural horror debut that turns an ordinary expression into something genuinely terrifying. After witnessing the traumatic suicide of a patient, psychiatrist Rose Cotter begins experiencing increasingly disturbing encounters with people wearing sinister smiles. As her grip on reality deteriorates, Rose investigates a disturbing pattern of deaths and discovers that something far more sinister may be responsible. Kurt, Taylor, Dan, and Steve break down the film’s psychological horror, its unsettling performances, and how Finn transforms everyday interactions into deeply uncomfortable encounters. The discussion explores the film’s treatment of trauma, its effective use of jump scares, and Sosie Bacon’s compelling performance as a woman struggling to confront both a supernatural threat and her own troubled past. They also examine the film’s disturbing imagery, its memorable ending, and why Smile became one of the most effective original horror releases of its era.
