This week: Brats and Potato Salad!

In the 5th episode of Three Cooking Nerds, three members of the Three Angry Nerds Podcast (threeangrynerds.com) cook a recipe separately over the internet, but together. One host takes the reigns and the others follow suit. Watch as Kurt, Lee, and Ethan cook Brats and Potato Salad. Want to follow along? Here is the recipe: Lee’s Beer Brats with Mom’s Potato Salad Ingredients: Pack of bratwurst (Johnson brand 5-pack is what I use) 2 bottles of beer, preferably ales (i.e. Blue Moon, Fat Tire, Sam Adams, etc) ½ Yellow onion, sliced 3 russet potatoes 3 eggs Small jar of gherkin pickles Mayo Dry mustard salt/pepper Directions In either a slow cooker or large pot, add the bratwurst, sliced onion, and beer. Set heat to simmer and allow at least 5-6 hours to cook. For best results, allow the brats to cook overnight or all day (8+ hours). Fill a large pot with water, then add potatoes and eggs. Bring the water to a boil, then turn down the heat to allow for a light boil (High heat at first, then medium-low after the water begins to boil). Allow eggs and potatoes to cook until the potatoes are soft. You can check by using a fork to test for firmness. Once the potatoes are cooked, allow them a few minutes to cool. While waiting for the potatoes to cool, prepare and light the grill. After the potatoes have cooled, peel the potato skin off. Cut the potatoes into “bite-sized” pieces and place them into a mixing bowl. Remove the shell from the hard-boiled eggs (placing them in cold water after they’ve boiled will make this easier) and cut them into pieces and place them in the mixing bowl. Finely chop 3 gherkin pickles and place them into the mixing bowl. In a measuring cup, add ~1 cup mayo, tsp dry mustard, salt/pepper (season to taste), and 1 tbsp of pickle juice. Mix well and pour the “dressing” into the mixing bowl of potatoes/eggs. Gently toss the mixture until all potatoes and eggs are covered by the dressing. Once the potato salad is done, add wood chips to grill and take the cooked bratwurst and place them on the heated grill. Cook for about 3-5 minutes, turn the brats, then continue cooking for about 2-3 minutes or until done. Remove from the grill, place in a hot dog bun, add condiments, and enjoy! Note: You can use the extra cooked onion slices as a garnish for the brats!
